Why Waterfall, Treemap, Polar Area, and Lollipop Charts Export as Images, Not Editable Objects¶

This is the detail worth knowing before you build a report you plan to export: four specific chart types don't export as editable native objects the way the rest do, and it's worth understanding why before it surprises you in the final deck.

The Four Exceptions¶

Bar, column, line, scatter, doughnut, pie, and their stacked variants all export as genuine, editable PowerPoint chart objects - click on one after export and you can change colors, resize it, or open its data table, same as building it by hand. Waterfall, Treemap, Polar Area, and Lollipop charts export as high-quality images instead.

Why This Happens¶

This isn't a corner Opionate cut - it's a real limitation of PowerPoint itself. PowerPoint's native chart engine simply has no chart type that can hold a Treemap or Waterfall as an editable object (both would need PowerPoint's newer "chartEx" format, which isn't broadly supported for programmatic export), and Polar Area and Lollipop have no native PowerPoint chart type at all. There's no way to deliver these four as something you could click into and edit in PowerPoint, because PowerPoint itself doesn't have a slot for them.

What This Looks Like in Practice¶

Visually, an exported Waterfall or Treemap chart looks identical to the live version in your report - fully rendered, on-brand, ready to present. The difference only shows up if you try to click into it afterward: rather than opening an editable chart with a data table, it behaves like a picture. You can resize or reposition it on the slide like any image, but you can't edit its underlying colors or data from within PowerPoint.

Planning Around This¶

If you know a report is headed for a PowerPoint export where the recipient will need to edit individual charts - swap colors, adjust the data, restyle for a brand refresh - favor the standard chart types (bar, column, line, scatter, doughnut, pie) for anything that needs that flexibility, and reserve Waterfall, Treemap, Polar Area, and Lollipop for cases where the visual itself is what matters and further editing isn't expected. If You Need an Editable Version of One of These Four¶

There's no current way to export these four as an editable native object. If you specifically need an editable version, rebuilding the same comparison as one of the standard editable chart types (a stacked bar chart in place of a waterfall, for instance) may be a workable substitute, depending on how much of the specialized chart type's presentation you need to preserve.

FAQ¶

Does this affect how the chart looks in the live report itself?
No - this only affects what happens after export to PowerPoint. The live report and the shared link both render all chart types fully, interactively.

Will this list of four ever change?
It's tied to what PowerPoint's own chart engine supports natively, not an arbitrary Opionate decision - so it would only change if PowerPoint itself adds native support for these chart types.

Can I tell which chart types are affected before I build my report?
Yes - Waterfall, Treemap, Polar Area, and Lollipop are the only four; every other available chart type exports as a fully editable object.

Does the image-exported version look lower quality than the editable ones?
No - it's a high-quality rendering, visually equivalent to the live chart. The only difference is that it can't be edited as a chart object afterward.
