How Many Responses Do You Need Before Category Generation Is Worth Running?¶
There's no fixed number of responses that unlocks a "good enough" category set - but there is a real pattern worth knowing before you generate categories on a question that's only a handful of responses deep.
Why Timing Matters¶
Category generation analyzes whatever responses exist for a question at the moment you run it (see What Text Analytics Actually Analyzes for the full picture). Run it on twelve responses and the categories reflect the range of themes present in those twelve - which may be a fair sample of what you'll eventually collect, or may just be an early, narrow slice that a later, larger set of responses would have suggested differently.
Signs You're Generating Too Early¶
If your responses are still trickling in and the ones you have so far all sound similar to each other, a generated category set at that point risks being thinner than what your finished dataset will actually support - real variety that later respondents would introduce simply hasn't shown up yet.
Signs You Have Enough¶
A rough, practical signal: if you're reading through your current responses and starting to see the same handful of themes repeat rather than encountering something genuinely new with each new response, you've likely captured the real range of what's there - which is a reasonable point to generate categories, even if data collection isn't fully finished.
You're Not Locked In Either Way¶
This isn't a one-shot decision. Generating early and thin isn't a mistake you're stuck with - you can always generate again later once you've collected more (see Running Multiple Classification Passes on the Same Question), and your first attempt's classification work stays intact regardless. Waiting until every last response is in isn't necessary either, especially if you want to start reviewing themes while collection is still wrapping up.
Small, Fixed-Size Studies¶
For a study where you know in advance you'll only ever have a modest number of responses - a niche B2B audience, an internal survey to a small team - there's no "wait for more" to do. Generate categories once you're reasonably confident collection has captured your actual audience, small as it may be; a thinner category set is simply an honest reflection of a smaller, more homogeneous response set, not a sign you did anything wrong.
FAQ¶
Is there a minimum response count Text Analytics requires?
Category generation works on whatever responses exist for the question - there's no arbitrary floor you need to hit before you can run it.
Should I wait until the survey closes to generate categories?
Not necessarily - if you want an early read while collection continues, generating on your current responses and regenerating later once you have more is a reasonable approach.
Does generating categories early and regenerating later cost extra credits?
Yes - each category generation run is its own credit-based action, so regenerating later is a separate cost, not a free refinement of the first run.
Will a small response set produce fewer categories automatically, or does it force the same number regardless?
The categories reflect the actual variety present in the responses you have - a smaller, more homogeneous set naturally tends to produce a smaller category set, not a padded-out one.
