Connecting Opionate to Claude via MCP¶

Opionate exposes two separate MCP connectors, not one. They live at different addresses, require different levels of access, and do genuinely different things - worth understanding both before you connect either.

The Two Connectors¶

Public docs connector - read-only access to Opionate's Docs and Playbooks content. No account, no sign-in, nothing to authorize. Anyone can add this and ask Claude to search or summarize published articles.

Authenticated survey-drafting connector - lets Claude create and edit your own survey drafts, browse your own Media Library, and nothing beyond that. This one requires you to sign in and explicitly authorize it, because it acts on your account.

If you only want Claude to answer questions from Opionate's documentation, you only need the first one. If you want Claude to actually help you build a survey, you need the second - and that's what the rest of this guide covers.

Connecting the Authenticated Connector¶

1. In Claude, open the option to add a custom connector (this lives in Claude.ai's or Claude Desktop's connector settings - the exact menu path can shift as Claude's UI evolves, so if these steps don't match what you see, check Anthropic's current documentation for "adding a custom connector").
2. Add Opionate's authenticated MCP connector.
3. Claude will redirect you to sign in to your Opionate account (if you aren't already), then show a consent screen listing exactly what access is being requested - your own surveys, and your own Media Library.
4. Approve the request. Claude is now connected, scoped to your account only.

Nothing here is a one-time global setting on Opionate's side - the authorization is tied to the specific AI client you just connected, using a standard OAuth flow. You can revoke it at any time from your connected-apps settings without affecting anything else in your account.

What You Can Do Once Connected¶

• Ask Claude to draft a new survey, or edit a draft you already started - both Classic Survey and Advanced Survey (Pairwise Comparison, Sequence Flow, Stimulus sections). See Drafting Surveys with Claude for what that actually looks like in conversation.
• Ask Claude to find or reference an existing image or video from your Media Library while building a Stimulus or Pairwise Comparison section. See Referencing Your Media Library with Claude.
• Ask Claude what changed in a recent AI-assisted edit, or undo one, for a Classic Survey draft.

What This Can't Do (Yet)¶

• No publishing. Claude can build and edit a draft, but only you can publish it live.
• No panel recruitment. Launching or managing a Prolific wave stays a workspace-only action.
• No results or analytics access. Claude can't read your survey responses, dashboards, or reports through this connector.
• No AI-driven media upload. Claude can browse what's already in your Media Library and point you to the upload page, but it can't upload a new image or video on your behalf.
• No undo history for Advanced Survey edits. Version history and revert are available for Classic Survey drafts only - see Drafting Surveys with Claude for why.

None of this is a temporary limitation waiting on a future release notice - it's a deliberate boundary. Opionate's AI connector is built for drafting and editing your own survey content, not for acting on your account more broadly.

FAQ¶

Can I connect both Opionate connectors at once?
Yes - they're independent, and having both connected just means Claude can search Opionate's documentation and help with your own drafts in the same conversation.

Does connecting Claude cost credits?
No - connecting and drafting through Claude uses the same underlying save logic as the workspace UI, and drafting itself isn't a credit-based action. Publishing, AI text analytics, and other credit-based actions still work the same way they always have, regardless of whether the draft was built by hand or with Claude's help.

What happens to a survey Claude helped draft if I disconnect the connector afterward?
Nothing - it's a normal survey draft in your account like any other, unaffected by whether the connector that helped create it is still connected.

Is this Opionate's own login, or does it use Google?
It's a separate authorization step scoped specifically to the connecting AI client, distinct from how you'd sign in to Opionate directly with a password or with Google.
