Starting a Survey from the Template Gallery¶
A blank survey is the right starting point when you genuinely don't know yet what you're building. Most of the time, though, you already have a rough shape in mind - a standard NPS wave, a post-event feedback form, a concept-testing Advanced Survey with the same section structure your team always uses. For those, starting from a template beats starting from nothing.
Two Places to Find a Template¶
The public template gallery lives at Opionate's Templates page, browsable without signing in. It holds templates staff have promoted into it - ready-made Classic Surveys and Advanced Surveys anyone can preview and start from.
Your own workspace's template list is a private area with two tabs: Public Templates (the same public gallery, without leaving your workspace) and My Templates (anything you've personally saved - see our guide on saving a survey as a template). Both are searchable, and public templates can be filtered by category.
Using a Template¶
However you found it, the flow is the same:
- Open the template's detail page to see what it actually contains before committing - its description, and a preview of its questions or sections.
- Click "Use this template."
- If you're not signed in yet, you'll be prompted to sign in or create a free account first - and once you do, you're dropped straight into your new survey rather than back at the template page, so signing up mid-browse doesn't cost you your place.
- Your new survey is created in your account, built from the template's saved content, ready to edit like any survey you built from scratch. A Classic Survey template is ready instantly; an Advanced Survey template (one with Stimulus, Pairwise Comparison, or Sequence Flow sections) takes a moment longer, since its images and video are being copied into your own account behind the scenes - you'll see a brief "preparing" step before it lands.
What You Get, and What You Don't¶
Using a template gives you a fully independent copy - the template's questions, sections, logic, and (for an Advanced Survey) its media, all copied into a brand-new survey that's entirely yours to edit, publish, and collect responses on. What you don't get is any connection back to the template itself afterward: editing your new survey never changes the template, and the template being edited or removed later never affects a survey you already created from it. Each use is a clean, independent starting point, not a live link to a shared source.
FAQ¶
Do I need an account to browse the template gallery?
No - the public gallery is browsable by anyone. You'll only need to sign in (or create a free account) at the point you actually click "Use this template."
What happens if I click "Use this template" while logged out?
You'll see a quick sign-in prompt. Once you're signed in, you're taken straight to your new survey - you don't have to re-find the template and start over.
Is there a difference between a template in the public gallery and one I saved myself?
Only in visibility. A template in the public gallery was promoted there by staff; a template you save yourself stays private to your account under My Templates unless a staff member promotes it. The "Use this template" experience is otherwise identical either way.
Can I preview a template's questions before using it?
Yes - the template's detail page shows a preview of its content before you commit to using it.
Does using a template cost credits?
No - creating a new survey from a template doesn't consume credits, the same as creating any new survey from scratch.
